Blond on Skid RowPosted by Portrait| Los Angeles Skid Row (Los Angeles, United States) on 2 September 2007 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. For now, this will be my last image from the choir series. The little blond girl creates a point of extreme tension on skid row. Blond and blue eyed, she is everything that skid row can't be, she represents everthing that the people on the nickel can't be. Skid Row is all about race, and America's injustice to people of color. What makes this one girl special, nothing...however, she represents an americanized standard. A system of binding people based on the hue of their skin. Main stream media, and advertising have branded images in the minds of consumers, these images often exclude broad ideals of physical looks. What is attractive to you? Have you ever watched an Asian-American girl playing with a blond barbie doll. Have you ever heard the thoughts of a little latina girl about her looks, America's imagery can mis-shape cultural pride. It can create self-race-hate. I am sure that is why you don't see little blond kids very often on skid row. all work(images, text, and comments) are owned by william shepherd. All Rights Reserved Copyright(c) 2007-2008.
