I just watched the movie "The Soloist" which peaked my interest in the homeless situation in America. Your blog provides a view into an existence that most of us refuse to look in the eye. Thank you for sharing your images and words.

I would phrase it differently. I'd say that an educated underclass is a threat to those in power. This is not just mere speculation or observation of current social conditions. The educational and political establish was quite open about it in the early part of the 20th century. They said very candidly that real education was to be reserved for the elites and that the lower orders were only to be taught enough to obey orders and follow instructions --in order to be good employees and consumers. And they made it clear that education was a threat to the system and likely to breed dissent and discontent.

Yes, essentially, afraid to be associated with certain views that are deliberately marginalized and made unpopular. This isn't a society that has much use for empathy. The official line in this country is that individuals are completely responsible for their own condition. This both excuses what is and isn't done, to and for, the unfortunate (since there are no "unfortunate" people by this logic), and lets rich people believe they deserve to be wealthy --no matter how they got their money.

I think we made some progress for women for awhile --at least for some women. But yes, I'm not prudish by any means, but I think the context is important, and these posters, where they are, represent regression to a more primitive state. Such as they are, they represent the unattainable --women that wouldn't even talk to someone on Skid Row.

I was referring to the fact that Americans don't want to know how the "sausage" is made. They don't really want to know what is done in their name. They prefer pretty pictures and pictures that make them feel good about themselves. They want to believe that we are only a force for good in the world, that we don't kill innocent people, that we're really bringing "peace and freedom" to whatever country we're bombing, etc.

I was watching "The Killing Fields" last night and had similar thoughts about the Cambodian family who "escaped" to the US and found themselves living in a slum that represented a stark reduction in the quality of life they lived, with fewer economic resources, in Cambodia.

I also found it interesting to observe the contrast between then and now in terms of photography. The next to nothing coverage of the American destruction of Southeast Asia looked almost gratuitous by comparison with the completely non-existent coverage of the destruction we're visiting upon Iraq and Afghanistan. Our corporate media have completed eliminated any images that don't perpetuate our comforting illusions.

I don't think there is any other Western country where the obedient and conforming many get so little from a system that openly and contemptuously exploits them from the top while being so enamored of their exploiters. There are many many people in this country who believe, or want to believe, that people like the ones you photograph have only themselves to blame for their condition. Boy, are a lot of them in for a rude awakening in the not too distant future.

Wow, that you've gotten so many private emails, and it would appear, so few public comments, is very interesting. Apparently there are a lot of people out there even more afraid than I am. I used to say whatever I thought in public, but with all our new "freedom" I find myself being a lot more careful than I used to be.

"In Central City Los Angeles, money speaks in clear and easy to understand terms."

That's how it talks everywhere. This country couldn't function the way it does without an underclass; and in particular, it wouldn't be so profitable for those at the top. You can't have an economic aristocracy without serfs. This country was built on slave labor in one form or another, and got "out of kilter" after the Great Depression and FDR. For awhile it looked like we might be headed to where just about anybody could make a decent life for himself without proper obedience to the powers that be. But, hey, how ya going make $100 million a year as a CEO if all your employees are drawing a living wage?

The world is full of inequality and injustice. LA is only one small part of this world. I live in Los Angeles for 7 years and heard stories of Skid Row. In one of Earth richest city, the home to Hollywood and celebrities of American entertainment industry, so many live with nothing.

You have a great photoblog.
